The Australian Career Book Award – 2022 Committee Members

The Award Committee brings together Fellows of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) with Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA) members, accredited career counsellors and psychologists, and HR professionals in a collegial exercise to review recent Australian career books and determine the awarded book for 2022. The 2022 Award Committee members are:

Philipa Duthie FRSA: Director RSA Oceania, after having held previous strategic roles with the society. She has extensive knowledge of the NFP and social change sectors, and has worked in higher education and government roles. She also works as a freelance copywriter and editor for an ethical clothing label, and advocates for supply chain transparency.

Michelle Gibbings FRSA: is the workplace expert. Internationally recognised, she is the author of three books – with Career leap: How to reinvent and liberate your career being a Finalist Book in the inaugural Award Cycle 2018. She is welcomed on stages globally to help inspire leaders, teams and organisations to create successful workplaces. Her mantra is simple: help people thrive and progress is accelerated.

Brody Hannan FRSA: AFHEA (Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy) is an Infantry Officer within the Australian Army. Prior to his career in the military, he held various positions in the education, government and science policy sectors. He regularly contributes to Professional Military Education (PME) through publications for Grounded Curiosity and The Cove.

Kathryn Jackson FRSA: Fellow, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and Senior Practitioner, European Mentoring and Coaching Council is one of New Zealand’s most qualified and experienced career transition and leadership coaches with 20+ years experience as a People Professional. She holds an MA in Motivation at Work, and trained with the Oxford School of Coaching in 2005. She designs and delivers workshops, offers individual coaching, partners with HR teams, and champions new coaches to the industry.

Kathryn holds the position of lead coaching advisor for the NZ Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience. She is an active and engaging writer, and author of Resilience at work: practical tools for career success – a 2019 award Finalist Book.

Kaye Nolan FRSA: CDAA professional member, Career Development Practitioner for eighteen years, and a registered psychologist. She transitioned into these roles after managing and teaching in the Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing at Chisholm Institute.
Suzanne Cremen PhD: lectures, teaches, and consults on the depth psychology of vocation and careers at the Life Artistry Centre in Australia and the Pacifica Graduate Institute (USA). Suzanne’s research is published in international peer-reviewed journals and she has chaired symposia and presented at international conferences including IAEVG. Her background includes working as a lawyer, conference producer, screenwriter, publisher, and holistic career counsellor for adults in midlife. She is the author of From career to calling: A depth psychology guide to soul-making work in darkening times (Routledge) – a 2020 award Finalist Book.

Arwen Summers: Arwen Summers is a former book editor and publisher, now turned content
professional. She has over 15 years’ experience in book editing, publishing, project
management, and client relations. She was most recently a non-fiction publisher at Hardie GrantBooks, where she commissioned This working life – the 2022 awarded book for The Australian Career Book Award – hosted by the Royal Society of Arts Oceania.

Catherine Hughes PhD: has a PhD in vocational psychology, two post-graduate qualifications in career education, and over 30 years experience in delivering career services in schools. She is the Founder of Grow Careers, a sessional Course Leader for the Graduate Certificate in Careers Education and Development at RMIT University, a Career Development Consultant and author of career development resources to support school-based career practitioners, high school students and their families. Recently, over a three-year period, Catherine was the International Adviser to CareerMe in Sri Lanka.

Catherine has been invited to write content for national career websites and online courses to support student career development and to develop professional learning materials for teachers delivering career education courses. She has been a member of writing teams for national and state career development curriculum initiatives, and has delivered career education and career services and workshops at national and international career conferences. Catherine was the recipient of the CDAA 2013 Researcher of the Year Award. Her work in career development was recognised when she was selected as a finalist in the 2018 Tasmanian Community Service Awards, Outstanding Achiever Award category and her books, Careers work in schools: A primer for career development facilitators and Careers work in schools: Cost-effective career interventions were finalist books for The Australian Career Book Award supported by RSA ANZ in 2018.

Jacqui Pretty: Founder of Grammar Factory and leading editor of professional books across the business spectrum helping writers present themselves and their services effectively with vision, precision, and decision. Her own publication Book blueprint: How to write an awesome book helps professionals take the first steps to writing with clarity and engagement. Jacqui has extensive knowledge of writing, editing, book production, and the publishing sector. She brings her vision, precision, and decision to the Award Committee. She is presently working in Europe while maintaining contact with the Australian book scene.

Gaynor Martyn, FRSA: CDAA (Victoria), Member of the Australian Centre for Career Education and recipient of the David Osborne Award for Excellence in Regional Career Development. Gaynor has over 15 years career counselling experience specialising in planning for people with non neurotypical ways of thinking, and concurrently working in social research as an Executive Interviewer on the HILDA (Living in Australia longitudinal study).

Psychometric testing is a valuable part of her counselling toolkit strategy providing:

  • Career Program and Project Management and Co-ordination
  • Networking / marketing with government and private business
  • Implementation of the Victorian Careers Curriculum Framework
  • Writing of professional guidance materials for Careers Practitioners and mentoring colleagues.

June Smith: CDAA professional member and a recognised trainer with extensive experience in providing career change and outplacement services for state government departments as well as recruitment and selection at all levels including statutory board appointments.
Sandy Hutchison: AHRI professional member, former HRD Asia-Pacific for MMC, Founder and CEO of Career Money Life, a digital, self-service career and benefits platform. She also holds board positions supporting gender related issues at Women and Leadership Australia and Australian Gender Equality Council.

Warren Frehse: CDAA professional member and CICA registered professional career development practitioner. Having an extensive corporate HR and outplacement consulting background, Warren is currently a Senior Advisor in careers and employability at The University of Melbourne. He is a published author of Manage Your Own Career: Reinvent Your Job; Reinvent Yourself, and writes extensively for various media including workplace articles for The Age, Herald Sun and Sydney Morning Herald and has featured in podcasts for graduates making the transition into work.

Lawrence Arnold FRSA: Award Convenor, CDAA professional member (2003 – 2021), and Melbourne CBD career counsellor. Recently published books on career and employability are: The Australian Career Passport: Cross the career border with your core skills for work (2017); and The Australian Career Mentor: Career guidance for experienced professionals and new graduates (2015).

The Australian Career Book Award promotes high-quality, vision-inspired, practically-oriented career writing founded on evidence-based propositions. The role of Award Convenor is to develop the award processes and protocols, and coordinate the activities of the Award Committee.
